When you'd hear it
This is common in conversational Korean, especially when reacting to someone’s words with surprise, disbelief, or criticism; it appears often in dramas and casual speech. It can also occur in written dialogue, but it is not a neutral formal quoting pattern.
What learners get wrong
Repeats what was said with the speaker's astonishment attached: 저분이 사장님이시라니요? Like the others in this chapter its shape follows the original sentence type - -다니요? for a statement, -자니요? for a suggestion, -(으)라니요? for an instruction, -(이)라니요? for a noun. Stronger than -다고요?, which merely asks for a repeat.
