When you'd hear it

-다면서요 is common in spoken Korean when politely checking something heard from someone else, including conversations with coworkers or acquaintances. Without 요, -다면서 is casual and is common among friends and in dramas.

What learners get wrong

Unlike -다고 하다, which mainly reports what someone said, -다면서(요) usually checks or challenges information the speaker already heard. The listener is often expected to confirm, correct, or explain it.
