Plain form
Examples
바람이 시원하다.
The wind is cool.
우리 가족은 아파트에서 산다.
My family lives in an apartment.
When you'd hear it
This ending is common in written narration, reports, diary entries, headlines, and matter-of-fact self-talk. In conversation, it can sound blunt or strongly declarative, so speakers more often use 해요체 or 합니다체 with others.
What learners get wrong
Learners often attach 다 directly to every verb, but action verbs generally use ㄴ다 after a vowel stem and 는다 after a consonant stem, as in 산다 and 먹는다. Adjectives use 다 directly, as in 시원하다.
