When you'd hear it
This is common in everyday speech and writing, including conversations, dramas, and workplace explanations of plans. It is neutral in politeness and attaches to a verb to describe a planned action or purpose.
What learners get wrong
The subjects of the two actions are normally the same: 드라마를 보려고 한국어를 배워요 means “I study Korean to watch dramas.” For a purpose with a different subject, learners often need -기 위해(서) or another construction instead.
