When you'd hear it
This is common in everyday conversation, especially in the fuller pattern -(으)려던 참이다 when explaining that an action was imminent. It appears in dramas and casual workplace speech, often when someone suggests an action the speaker was already about to do.
What learners get wrong
Do not confuse it with -(으)려고 하다, which usually describes a present intention or plan. -(으)려던 often looks back on an action that was just about to happen, especially before an interruption or change of circumstance.
