When you'd hear it
This is common in neutral spoken Korean and in writing, especially when giving advice, explaining requirements, or describing what is needed to achieve a goal. It appears in everyday conversations, classroom instructions, workplace explanations, and polite questions such as 어떻게 해야 할까요?
What learners get wrong
Unlike -(으)면, which gives a general condition (“if/when”), -(으)려면 frames an intended goal (“if you want to…”). It often leads to a requirement or suggested action, such as -(으)려면 어떻게 해야 하다 or -(으)려면 필요하다.
