When you'd hear it
Common in everyday conversation when explaining that an action was imminent, especially before accepting an invitation or describing an interruption. It also appears in dramas and informal workplace speech; polite endings such as 참인데요 or 참이에요 are common.
What learners get wrong
This is more immediate than -(으)려고 하다: it presents the action as just about to happen, not merely as a plan or intention. The past-looking form 려던 does not necessarily mean the action happened in the past; context can show that it was about to happen now.
