When you'd hear it
This pattern is more common in writing, formal advice, speeches, and instructional language than in casual conversation. In dramas, it may sound deliberate or somewhat old-fashioned when one character gives another firm advice.
What learners get wrong
Learners often treat it as interchangeable with -(으)려면, but -(으)려거든 commonly introduces advice, an instruction, or a requirement in the following clause. -(으)려면 is the more neutral choice for ordinary “if you want to” statements.
