마저
majeo
Grammar · 1 sense
even this too - the last one left, and now that as well
Examples
믿었던 사람마저 등을 돌렸어요.
Even the person I trusted turned away.
마지막 버스마저 끊겨서 결국 걸어왔어요.
Even the last bus had gone, so I ended up walking.
When you'd hear it
마저 is common in both conversation and writing, especially when describing a worsening situation or a final disappointment. It appears in everyday speech, dramas, and serious written accounts; 마저도 adds extra emphasis.
What learners get wrong
Adds the very last item left in a set, and it belongs to bad news - 'and now even this'. Negative situations only: 얼굴마저 예쁘다 does not work where 얼굴까지 예쁘다 does. It may stand in an affirmative sentence, but only one whose overall drift is negative - 날씨도 추운데 바람마저 부는군요.
