When you'd hear it
만 is neutral and extremely common in both conversation and writing. Learners will hear it in everyday speech, dramas, and workplace conversation, and see it frequently in notices and prose.
What learners get wrong
Unlike 밖에, 만 does not require a negative predicate: 액션 영화만 봐요 is grammatical, while 액션 영화밖에 안 봐요 uses a negative. Both can mean “only,” but 밖에 emphasizes that nothing else is included.
