When you'd hear it

This is common in conversational Korean, especially when reacting to someone’s words with surprise, disbelief, or criticism; it appears often in dramas and casual speech. It can also occur in written dialogue, but it is not a neutral formal quoting pattern.

What learners get wrong

Unlike -다고 하다, this pattern usually echoes quoted words while adding the speaker’s reaction rather than simply reporting them. It is also different from -다니까, which typically emphasizes or insists on information.
