When you'd hear it

이다 is the dictionary form and is mainly seen in grammar explanations, writing, and formal styles. In everyday polite conversation, it usually appears as 이에요/예요, while formal speech uses 입니다.

What learners get wrong

이다 attaches to nouns, as in 학생이다, but 있다 is used for existence or location. Also, 이에요 follows a consonant-ending noun, while 예요 follows a vowel-ending noun.
