When you'd hear it
This form appears in every register, from casual conversation and dramas to workplace speech and formal writing. In casual speech it is often omitted when the intended phrase is obvious, but it is more likely to remain in careful writing or for emphasis.
What learners get wrong
Learners often expect 을/를 to mark only a concrete object. It can also follow quantity or frequency expressions, as in 10년을 기다리다 and 몇 번을 가다, where it gives the amount or number emphasis; these phrases may also appear without the particle.
