When you'd hear it
의 is especially common in writing, formal speech, announcements, and titles. In casual conversation, it is often omitted in familiar combinations such as 친구 집 and 동생 생일.
What learners get wrong
Learners often confuse 의 with 에 because 의 may sound like 에 in speech. 의 links two nouns, while 에 marks a place, time, or destination; also, Korean often omits 의 where English requires “'s.”
