This is common in both conversation and writing, from casual comparisons among friends to more polished comparisons in news, reports, and presentations. 비하면 often appears in everyday speech, while 에 비해서 is also frequent in explanatory or written contexts.
What learners get wrong
It contrasts a subject with a reference point, unlike 보다, which directly marks the item that is more or less. Use N에 비해(서)/비하면 when framing “compared with N,” and N보다 when saying “more than N.”
