마저 is common in both conversation and writing, especially when describing a worsening situation or a final disappointment. It appears in everyday speech, dramas, and serious written accounts; 마저도 adds extra emphasis.
What learners get wrong
마저 is stronger and more final-sounding than 도: 가족마저 suggests that even the family, the last people expected to help, failed. Use 도 for a neutral “also/even,” and 마저 when the added item feels especially surprising or discouraging.
