This ending is mainly literary or formal, appearing in writing, speeches, and deliberately old-fashioned or rhetorical dialogue. In everyday conversation, -지만 is much more common.

What learners get wrong

Here, 만 is a shortened contrasting ending, not the particle 만 meaning “only.” Unlike ordinary conversational -지만, -마는/-만 can sound formal, literary, or old-fashioned.
