When you'd hear it
끼리 is common in both conversation and writing, including casual speech, classroom talk, and workplace discussions. It attaches to a noun to highlight people or things acting within the same group, as in 친구들끼리 or 학생들끼리.
What learners get wrong
끼리 is not simply a replacement for 같이: it emphasizes that members of the same group are acting among themselves. 같이 only means “together” and does not necessarily exclude people outside that group.
