When you'd hear it

랑/이랑 is common in casual conversation, especially among friends, classmates, and family. It also appears in polite everyday speech, as in talking with a teacher, but is less typical in formal writing.

What learners get wrong

The casual 'with', normally followed by 같이. Same register warning as its listing use: 친구랑 같이 갈래? to a friend, but 선생님과 함께 in anything written.
