This ending is strongly old-fashioned and is most familiar from historical dramas, period fiction, and stylized portrayals of older male speakers. It is not normal in contemporary everyday conversation, though it can appear humorously or theatrically.
What learners get wrong
Do not confuse 의 here with the possessive particle 의: in this ending, it is part of a sentence-ending pattern. It is also distinct from modern neutral endings such as -네 and -다.
