When you'd hear it
This pattern is formal and somewhat literary, appearing in writing, speeches, dramatic declarations, and carefully worded conversation. -(으)ㄹ지언정 is especially literary; -(으)ㄹ망정 also occurs in emphatic spoken contrasts such as 못할망정 ... 하지 말다.
What learners get wrong
Grants the fact in front and then sets something contrary against it. In the shapes -지는 못할망정 and 은/는 못할망정 it marks the failure of the thing anyone would have expected, so that what happened instead comes as a shock. Verbs and adjectives take -(으)ㄹ망정, nouns 일망정, and the past is -았/었을망정.
