The polite form -아/어 주세요 is common in everyday requests, including shops, workplaces, and conversations with unfamiliar people. Softer or more formal versions such as -아/어 주실래요? and -아/어 주십시오 also occur, while -아/어 줘 is casual.
What learners get wrong
Unlike a plain imperative, -아/어 주세요 presents the action as something done for the speaker or another person. In 할아버지는 잉어를 강물에 놓아주었다, 놓아주다 means releasing the fish, not asking someone to release it.
