When you'd hear it

-으나 is formal and is especially common in writing, reports, presentations, and official or polished speech. In casual conversation, speakers usually prefer -지만 or -는데 instead.

What learners get wrong

Unlike -지만, -으나 can sound stiff in everyday conversation even when the contrast is the same. It attaches directly to an adjective or verb stem, as in 좋으나 or 세련되나.
