When you'd hear it

Common in everyday conversation and polite workplace speech, and also frequent in informal writing such as messages. It often appears with polite endings like 있어요 and 없어요.

What learners get wrong

Do not confuse it with -(으)ㄹ 수 있다/없다: 수 있다/없다 often concerns ability or ordinary possibility, while 수도 있다/없다 presents one possible outcome or adds emphasis. In expressions like 상상할 수도 없어요, 수도 없다 means “can’t even,” not simply “might not be able to.”
