When you'd hear it

되다 is an everyday verb used in conversation, while forms such as 선택되다, 수정되다, and 발의되다 are especially common in news, official notices, and workplace writing. Polite forms like 됐어요 and 됩니다 appear across both casual service interactions and formal announcements.

What learners get wrong

Learners often treat every English passive as 되다, but Korean frequently uses a dedicated passive verb or a 되다 compound such as 선택되다. For ability, use -(으)ㄹ 수 있다 rather than 되다 by itself.
