When you'd hear it

당 is common in price lists, advertisements, statistics, and official notices, and it also appears in ordinary speech when stating a rate. It is especially frequent with units such as 개, 명, 회, and 분.

What learners get wrong

당 focuses on a rate per unit, while 마다 more broadly means each or every and does not necessarily involve a price or numerical rate. Use 당 in expressions like 하나당 5천 원 and 마다 in expressions like 날마다.
