When you'd hear it
This is common in spoken Korean, including polite conversation and personal anecdotes, and appears often in dramas. The shorter form -고 보니 is especially natural in speech, while -고 보니까 is also widely used.
What learners get wrong
Unlike -고 나서, -고 보니(까) highlights a later realization or unexpected discovery, not merely that one action happened after another. It is also different from -아/어 보니(까), which focuses more on what someone discovered by trying or experiencing something.
