When you'd hear it
Common in everyday conversation, including casual plans and recounting what happened, and also frequent in neutral writing. It appears with all speech levels, since the politeness is marked on the final clause.
What learners get wrong
Learners often use -고 when they mean a clear cause, but -고 mainly links events without asserting that the first caused the second. For a causal link, compare -아서/어서.
