When you'd hear it
This is conversational and appears often in spoken Korean, especially in quick lists of alternatives among friends or family. It is also common in casual dialogue in dramas, usually with the form X건 Y건.
What learners get wrong
Unlike -거나, which neutrally links alternatives, -건 often appears in a paired form such as X건 Y건 and emphasizes that either choice is acceptable. Repeated -건 is a useful clue that this pattern is intended.
