When you'd hear it
Common in conversation and writing when listing illustrative cases, especially in complaints, explanations, and tentative speculation. It often appears with 하다, 말하다, or an unfinished second example, as in dialogue from dramas.
What learners get wrong
Unlike -거나, which presents alternatives more neutrally, -(ㄴ)다든지, (이)라든지 usually gives examples and suggests that other cases are possible too. Use -(ㄴ)다든지 with verbs and adjectives, but (이)라든지 with nouns.
