8 compliments in Korean that actually land
Korean compliments work by noticing. Telling someone they are beautiful is a line from a drama; telling them you can see they did their hair differently is something a real person says, and it is the kind of attention Koreans value. Taste, effort and the feeling of being around someone get praised more than faces do.
These eight run from the safest, which you could say to a coworker, to the ones that belong on a third date. All of them are in polite 요 speech.
-
머리 바꿨어요? 잘 어울려요.
meori bakkwosseoyo? jal eoullyeoyo.
Did you change your hair? It suits you.
Noticing a change is the classic Korean compliment, because it proves you were paying attention before. 잘 어울려요 (it suits you well) works for glasses, a coat, a new colour, anything a person chose.

오늘 스타일 좋네요.
oneul seutail jonneyo.
Your style looks good today.
The -네요 ending adds 'I just noticed', which keeps it light. Praising the outfit rather than the body is the safe register with colleagues and new acquaintances.

센스 있네요.
senseu inneyo.
You have good taste.
Literally: (You) have sense.
센스 covers taste, tact and reading the room: picking the right restaurant, remembering a detail, a well-chosen gift. It may be the most-given compliment in Korean, and it flatters judgement rather than appearance.

목소리가 좋아요.
moksoriga joayo.
You have a nice voice.
Voice compliments are common and not too forward, which makes this a good first one on a date. 목소리가 좋으시네요 with the honorific -시- if the person is older.

웃는 모습이 예뻐요.
unneun moseubi yeppeoyo.
Your smile is pretty.
Literally: The smiling appearance is pretty.
This compliments the way you smile, not your face, which is why it lands softer than 예뻐요 alone. For a man say 웃는 모습이 좋아요 or 멋있어요.

같이 있으면 편해요.
gachi isseumyeon pyeonhaeyo.
I feel at ease when I'm with you.
Literally: If together, (it is) comfortable.
편하다 (comfortable) is one of the highest compliments in Korean dating. It says more than 'fun' does, and it is often the sentence that turns seeing someone into something serious.

멋있어요.
meosisseoyo.
That's cool. / You look great.
Praise for men, for outfits, and for actions: standing up for someone or carrying a speech is 멋있어요 too. Said to a woman it compliments her attitude rather than her looks, which some prefer.

The usual answer to a compliment is a denial, 아니에요 (anieyo, not at all), sometimes with a wave of the hand. It is not false modesty so much as the expected move, and if you are the one being complimented, the same 아니에요 will serve you well.
